Saudi Arabia Flight Disruption: Options for Travellers and Employers
The attack on King Khalid International Airport on 10 October has brought renewed disruption to travel in Saudi Arabia. Riyadh airport operations have been suspended, with flight cancellations continuing into 11 October and some airline services already cancelled for 12 October. Travellers should confirm their arrangements directly with their airline before travelling to an airport.
Stratum Global Risk is receiving enquiries from organisations and individuals seeking coordinated departures. For those affected, the immediate priority is to establish which options are operationally viable and appropriate to their location, circumstances and travel documents.
What options should be considered?
Rebooking commercial flights.
Where services are operating, an alternative flight or revised itinerary may offer the most straightforward departure. Confirm the full journey, including onward connections, rather than relying on a flight appearing as scheduled online.
Departure through another airport.
Travelling to a different departure point may be an option, but requires confirmation of airport operations, flight availability and the security conditions along the journey. An alternative airport should not automatically be treated as a safer option.
Coordinated overland departure.
Where appropriate, road movement to a neighbouring country may provide access to onward flights. Border status, entry eligibility, Saudi exit requirements, transport arrangements and onward accommodation should all be verified before movement begins.
Charter aviation.
For some groups, a charter may warrant assessment. Availability depends on airport access, airspace restrictions, permissions and aircraft operator acceptance; it cannot be assumed to bypass the disruption.
Remaining in place temporarily.
Where movement would increase exposure or no confirmed departure is available, staying in suitable accommodation while arrangements are assessed may be the more appropriate course. Follow local authority instructions and relevant embassy advice. The FCDO currently advises British nationals to avoid King Khalid International Airport until it is secure.
Coordinate the whole journey
For employers, departure planning should begin with confirming personnel locations, contact details, documentation and any medical or family requirements. Transport, border access and onward travel need to form one coordinated plan, with clear communication if conditions change. Stratum’s Saudi Arabia Travel Risk Management & Assistance capability supports journey assessment, traveller assistance and coordinated movement. Our Middle East Evacuation Planning and Crisis Response capability supports organisations assessing relocation and departure options across the region.
Conditions remain fluid. Any movement plan should be checked against current airline, airport, border and official security information before departure.
